3 Minutes to Experience More Well-being Now
By Gretchen Fox Palmer, CEO of MTO Agency and Host of Well-being Weekend Camp
Just 12% of people surveyed in the 2023 Annual Well-being Report by lululemon believed their well-being is where they think it should be. That probably isn’t that much of a surprise to you… most of us are coping with more stress than ever in a seemingly constant state of crisis surrounding us.
The good news is that well-being is a skill — that means you can learn how to feel better.
Some people have experienced a Body Scan in a meditation or yoga class, this one is slightly different. In this version, I will guide you through a three minute exercise for you to place your attention on different parts of your body from the top of your head down to your toes, and back up again. As you place your attention on the different parts of your body, your job is to simply notice any sensations that are there. No need to change anything or attempt to relax, simply notice what is there.
Most of us spend the great majority of our time with our attention on our cognitive thought process, in our brains, analyzing our surroundings, mulling over our problems and assessing for risks. While this is a very important survival skill to avoid danger, it is not healthy to live in a constant state of hypervigilance. Stress produces cortisol. While cortisol is very important to enable us to fight or flee when danger arises but living in that state is extremely detrimental to our mental, emotional and physical health. We were not meant to remain in a perpetual state of anxiety, fear and stress.
To experience a state of well-being, we must train ourselves discernment. We must learn when it’s healthy to assess for risks and when we can relax, returning to the natural Zen state that all other animals living symbiotically in nature experience as their daily norm.
By simply shifting our attention and awareness from our cognitive state into our bodies, we can experience this sense of relief and ease. Want to give it a try?
I recorded this short video for you to see if you can feel a shift in just three minutes. I recommend using this Body Scan tool as many times a day as possible, especially when you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed or mentally charged. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
